Prevention Measures

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As you know, the United States is experiencing an outbreak of a respiratory illness called Coronavirus COVID-19. The symptoms of this virus include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, with possible pneumonia. Exposure to this illness comes from travel to affected areas or direct contact with someone who has the virus. With this rapidly evolving situation, we are following guidance from the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). We are implementing the following guidelines to give our students, staff, and parents the highest level of precaution and preventable measures from public health experts.

School Prevention Measures  Administration, Teachers and Staff

  • Will  provide time for all students to wash their hands upon arrival to school, before lunch, and after using the restroom.
  • Will clean specific areas in the classroom to include desktops, doorknobs, tables, etc.
  • Will reinforce standard precautions and advise students to refrain from touching their face, nose, or mouth, and to cough or sneeze into their elbow or a tissue.

Handwashing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of this virus and should be done with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

CDC: Stop the Spread of Germs

Will prioritize cleaning specific areas several times a day. This includes bathrooms, common spaces, door handles, etc.

  • Will keep soap containers fully stocked in bathrooms and in classrooms where sinks are available.
  • Classrooms should be stocked with hand sanitizer that contains 60% isopropyl alcohol, disinfectant wipes, and tissues.

Staying Home Sick: Students and Staff

  • If a student or staff member has a fever of 100 degrees or greater, coughing, and/or difficulty breathing, they should stay home and contact their health care provider and the school.
  • Current Fever Policy- Students who have a fever should stay home until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication.  We are keeping the 24 hour policy in place until further notice.  In areas where coronavirus is actively circulating, public health officials are recommending 72 hours.

Students and Staff experiencing symptoms at school

  • WIll be immediately quarantined in an area and monitored by a staff member until a family member or emergency contact picks up the student.
  • Will be asked to leave school immediately and contact their health care provider.

Self-quarantine:  anyone being self-quarantined should stay home and away from others. They should self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 including daily temperature checks, the quarantine should last 14 days. If symptoms develop, contact your healthcare provider.

Who Should Quarantine

  • Recent travelers to countries currently with widespread or ongoing community spread (e.g., China, Iran, Italy, South Korea).  The following website has up-to-date information regarding this activity:

CDC - Coronavirus Disease Information for Travel

  • Those with symptoms or exposure to confirmed cases of COVID-19.

                 Exposure Examples

  • Example #1: Wife is confirmed to have COVID-19; therefore, her husband should self-quarantine for 14 days, monitor symptoms, and contact his healthcare provider if he becomes ill.
  • Example #2: Mother had close contact with a friend that had a confirmed case of COVID-19. Mother needs to self-quarantine for 14 days; however, children do not need to self-quarantine and do not need testing for COVID-19. If any member of the household becomes sick and is confirmed positive with COVID-19, children will need to self-quarantine for 14 days and monitor symptoms.

Protocol for Quarantined Student or Staff

In the event that Public Health and/or Health Care Provider quarantines a student or staff member,  the following steps will be implemented:

  • Remove the student or staff member from the school campus
  • Notify staff and parents of all students
  • Cancel all school events until further notice
  • Perform extensive cleaning of the school
  • Upon returning to school, students and staff must present a health release statement from either Public Health or their Health Care Provider.

  • If a student is sent home for symptoms of COVID-19, they will be excused
  • If a student does not come to school because of being quarantined, they will be excused
  • If a student does not come to school because of symptoms of COVID-19, they will be excused pending notification from student’s health care provider or the Alabama Department of Public Health
  • School closures will follow the Alabama State Department of Education’s guidelines for school closing, including State of Emergency, if applicable.

Instructional Assignments

  • Teachers are asked to prepare supplemental/review materials for students  in the event ofprolonged absences related to COVID-19.

School Events and Travel

  • All overseas or international field trips are cancelled per the state superintendent.  Any faculty, staff, or students who travel overseas on private trips could be subject to a 14 day quarantine before returning to school if they have sickness or symptoms related to COVID-19.
